Australian Open 2023, Talia Gibson draws lucky loser or qualifier in first round

Talia Gibson of Western Australia has gained early confidence ahead of her Australian Open debut after getting a qualifier or fortunate loser in the first round.

Gibson, 18, was given a wild card to the grand slam following a solid debut year on the circuit in which she won three ITF events and improved her game.

She will have to wait for her first opponent, which will help her chances of winning at Melbourne Park.

Barbora Krejcikova of the Czech Republic, the 20th seed, might face her in the second round after drawing a qualifier first.

Storm Hunter, a wildcard entry from Western Australia, will face world No.89 Xinyu Wang in the first round.

Hunter, 28, had played the 21-year-old in the Miami qualifications last year, losing in straight sets 6-2 6-4.

The world No.227 has never advanced past the first round of a grand slam, and if she beats China’s Wang, she will almost certainly meet the 10th seed, Madison Keys.

Meanwhile, Tristan Schoolkate, who finished fourth in the last round of qualifications on Thursday, will have to hope for a fortunate loser place in the main draw.

Schoolkate, 21, was comfortably defeated in straight sets by German Jan-Lennard Struff, who had 14 unforced mistakes in the opening set.
