Melbourne Park is too hot for Outdoor Plays, Games Suspended

At Melbourne Park, conditions have improved. For a 5 p.m. resumption of play, Outdoor matches will be called at 4:50 p.m. local time.

Tuesday afternoon, when the AO Heat Stress Scale hit 5, play was suspended on the outer courts at the Australian Open.

Play continued until the completion of an even number of games or the end of a tie-break. The outdoor courts will not host any fresh matches. On outdoor practice courts, play has also been suspended. Play has continued beneath closed roofs at Rod Laver Arena, Margaret Court Arena, and John Cain Arena.

To determine whether play on outdoor courts may be resumed, the Referee will continually review the conditions and the policy under the tournament’s Extreme Heat Policy. Players will receive at least 30 minutes’ warning before play resumes once that decision has been reached.

The AO Heat Stress Scale takes into account air temperature, radiant heat (sun intensity), humidity, and wind speed, all of which effect a player’s capacity to disperse heat from their body. In the Melbourne Park precinct, these factors are measured in real time at five distinct locations.
